Comparative Study into Microstructural and Mechanical Characterization of HVOF-WC-Based Coatings

The main objective of this work was to characterize and compare the microstructural mechanical properties as well erosion resistance WC-12Co WC-10Co-4Cr coatings. High Velocity Oxy Fuel (HVOF) process applied carbon manganese steel API 2H typically used in oil gas industries. Microstructural characterization feedstock powder coatings conducted using scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic (EDS) analysis, diffraction (XRD) for phase determination, particle size distribution, surface roughness measurement. average former 13.7 µm whereas it 28.1 latter. results showed that smaller tends melt easier than larger one, deduced from SEM images measurements. EDS XRD both indicated occurrence WC decomposition where plays a significant role these results. Mechanical discussed through comparing hardness, erosion, adhesion test coating exhibited higher hardness resistance, due extent also carbide within layer; are same reasons superior strength compared latter one per ASTM Standard “C633- 13”.
